Mangos

What's in a mango? I will admit that mangos are one of my favorite fruits. Fortunately mangos from mexico are in season right around the summer time! How should I pick a mango to take home? Well don't be afraid to feel it.

Give it a little squeeze. See if it gives! You want to find a mango that if you squeeze it too hard you could give it a few bruises, but you want to buy a bruise free mango. many times when the mangos are so ripe they are oozing a syrup that makes them sticky. To me I get excited about this because I know they are going to be extra sweet! I also like to buy mangos ripe rather than letting them ripen. This is because mangos ripen the best on the tree and are much less sweet if they are harvested and let ripen on their own.

Color is also very important. Don't buy a green mango unless it is of that variety. Many mangos let harvest on the tree don't turn their proper red and orange color. This goes for all fruits (the more colorful, the more flavorful and ultimately better for you).

Lastly look at the mango's shape. Look for mangos that are football shaped rather than flat or thin. The flat and thin mangos will be stringy and this is very undesirable.

GOOD LUCK! Enjoy your mango! Some mango recipes are to come so stay tuned!
